The need to reduce cost, enhance capability, improve time to market, and maintain profit margins is confronting electronic manufacturers with critically important decisions in adopting manufacturing test strategies for electronic circuit assemblies.
What are the cost-effective options for testing short product runs? What new strategies and technologies are available for prototype testing? Which test strategies offer a good fit with low volume/high mix production environments?
Flying Probe testers do not require fixtures and can make precise contact with assemblies under test, thereby abating problems associated with board access. Test programs can be prepared quickly and set-up times are almost eliminated. This translates into less cost and more time saving.
Acculogic's Sprint 4510 is a high performance Flying Probe test system that provides high fault coverage with accuracy and repeatability. The system's robust design and rugged build guarantees high mean times between failures (MTBF).
Sprint 4510 can be loaded either manually, or through an automated in-line conveyor. The conveyor is SMEMA compliant and fully programmable. This feature together with rapid program change allows simple installation and high productivity in low to medium volume production environments. Flexible, accurate, repeatable and reliable operation of Sprint 4510 have turned this platform into a production work-horse for prototype test in both contract and original equipment manufacturing facilities.
Where and when to use the Sprint 4510
Low volume high mix manufacturing
New product validation - prototype testing
Repair depot
Advantages of the system
No fixture required translates into substantial savings
Quick program development - within hours or a few days (1-2), not weeks
Easy to apply changes (ECOs) - no fixture, just the program
Types of test performed
Analog MDA (in-circuit) test - non power-up
Vectorless digital test (Junction Diode, Capacitive test)
Power-up: Boundary Scan, some limited digital test (no back drive)
Automated Optical Inspection
SPRINT's main features
Linear Surface Motors
The four heads are on the same high precision platen
The four heads have the same mechanical characteristics.
The four probes have the same length and the same angle.
The four heads can move anywhere on the platen independently.
Alternative head movement
Four probes requires a very complicated architecture.
The four probe holders are in two different planes.
The probes have different angles.
The probes have different lengths.
The movement of the probes in the bottom plane (green mechanism) is limited by the position of the probes in the top plane (yellow mechanism).
Probe Angle(6 degrees)
All 4 probes are at 6° vertical angle, this provides coverage and repeatability advantage
Sprint's probe angle is 182m m or 7 mils more accurate on a board warped 1 mm.
Sprint's more vertical probing angle minimizes the frequency of 'mis-hits' or 'slips' on warped boards.

Acclogic - Double-Sided Flying Scorpion |
The Flying Scorpion is a new generation double-sided flying probe system for one stop testing.
|
The system has been designed to test assembled boards with both mixed technology and surface mount designs. The Flying Scorpion is highly innovative and based on a totally new technical approach. With patented independent 3 axis 'joystick probes', it is possible to contact test points that cannot be reached using conventional moving probers on boards as large as 1005mm x 650 mm.
Moreover, for components that cannot be electrically tested, the system features double-sided optical inspection to yet further enhance fault coverage.
The result is fast turn-on time with uncompromised high fault coverage, virtually regardless of the board technology.
Additionally, if you have high volume products that need bed-of-nails testing, test programs developed on the Flying Scorpion run directly on the company's high speed Scorpion MDA with no programming reinvestment.
Key Features
Simultaneous double-sided probing. This unique concept allows simultaneous top and bottom probing of the Unit Under Test (UUT) with absolutely no restriction of probe functionality True 3 Dimensional joystick probes designed to overcome traditional probe access restrictions. Expandable to 24 joystick probes The industries highest fault coverage No manual board handling, tooling or set-up required One stop testing Fast, automated programming Maintenance-free planar drives accurately position the joystick probe modules over the test points Functional and boundary scan testing Full compatibility with the fixture-based Scorpion testers Modular hardware and software design |
